Google launches phones and thermostats with recycled plastics

Google has achieved one of its plastics goals ahead of schedule, revealing that all new Pixel phones and Nest thermostats include recycled content.

In 2019, the tech giant had pledged to incorporate recycled plastics content in all its hardware lines by 2022. Its range also included smart speakers, tablets, phone cases and charging stands.

According to edieGoogle has this week unveiled the designs of its new range of products. Pixel and Nestconfirming that all new products are designed with recycled materials.

The proportion and source of recycled plastic content for the new Pixel 5 smartphone has not been disclosed. However, Google claims it is the first phone made from 100% recycled aluminum. The company said the carbon footprint of recycled aluminum is 35% lower than that of virgin aluminum.

Google also reaffirmed its commitment to recycled materials, pledging that 50% of the plastic used in Google's products will be recycled. hardware is recycled or renewable (i.e. bio-based) by 2025. In terms of packaging, the company is targeting a portfolio of 100% recyclable and plastic-free products by 2025.

The company also aims to deliver hardware emissions and the disposal of waste in landfills in all its operations.
