DP World Callao launched the Shore Power system at the South Pier, becoming the first port terminal in Latin America to offer this technology for container ships powered by electricity from 100% renewable sources, certified by I-REC. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori; the Minister of Transport and Communications, Rafael Rey Rey; Tiemen Meester, Global Director of Port and Terminal Operations at DP World; Morten Johansen, Executive Vice President of Ports and Terminals Operations for the Americas at DP World; and Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; as well as Javier Moreira Calderón, General Manager of the CMA CGM shipping line.
During the ceremony, the connection was made between The first vessel in the CMA CGM fleet (CMA CGM PLATINUM) to use the shore power system at DP World Callao, marking a new milestone in the country's port operations. With a capacity of 13,100 TEU, a length of 335 meters, and a design methanol-ready, this ship, built in 2025, represents a new generation of vessels that incorporate technologies designed to make shipping more sustainable.
The implementation of this system is in addition to the nearly US$1.000 million invested by DP World in Peru over its 20 years of operations. The project was launched voluntarily as part of the company’s decarbonization strategy and its commitment to incorporating sustainable solutions into port operations.
This project is in addition to further investments totaling more than US$$1.3 billion that DP World considers necessary to continue strengthening the infrastructure and expanding the capacity of the South Pier to more than 4.3 million TEUs per year, in response to the growth of Peru’s foreign trade.
With its shore power infrastructure, the Port of Callao joins the 3% group of ports worldwide that currently have shore power systems. In the Americas, this technology is available in a limited number of countries, including Canada, the United States, and now Peru. As such, the project represents a new step forward in the energy transition of Peru’s port system and in the decarbonization of maritime transport.

Environmental Impact
The Shore Power system allows compatible vessels to connect to the shore-based power grid while docked, replacing the use of their auxiliary engines and reducing fuel consumption and emissions during their stay in port.
Currently, about 80% of the ships arriving at Pier 3 of DP World Callao are equipped with systems compatible with this technology, which will facilitate its adoption from the start of operations.
The system will prevent the emission of more than 6,300 metric tons of CO₂per year and reduce NOx, SOx, and particulate matter emissions generated by auxiliary engines while vessels are in port by more than 90%. It will also help reduce noise pollution and improve air quality in Callao.
