The recent IPCC report warns of the imminent threat of water scarcity, endangering food security in Latin America. We are exposed to catastrophic damage to infrastructure due to floods and landslides, as evidenced by the devastating passage of Cyclone Yaku in Peru, causing losses estimated at US$345 million, representing 0.1% of the country's GDP. In addition, as a result of extreme weather events, vector-borne epidemics, such as dengue fever, have skyrocketed. the urgency of preparation and adaptation.
The extraction of materials is pushing the ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to their limits. More than 11% of the world's raw materials are extracted in the region, even though it accounts for only about 8% of the world's population. The Circularity Gap Report Latin America and the Caribbean demonstrates how the region can take advantage of the circular economy to address systemic inefficiencies in meeting social needs, conserve its unique natural wealth and improve the well-being of its inhabitants.
