DP World Callao becomes the first port to use 100% renewable electric energy

Nicolás Gauthier, CEO of DP World Peru, presenting the decarbonization strategy.

On October 10, DP World signed a new alliance with Enel Peru to ensure that the electricity it uses for its operations comes from 100% renewable sources. This agreement represents a key step for DP World Peru in its goal to be carbon neutral by 2030.

This important alliance adds to a list of actions that the company has been taking to reduce its Carbon Footprint. These actions began with the measurement of its emissions and the transformation of its RTG cranes. This allowed them to reduce their CO2 emissions by 15%. In 2020, they changed the entire lighting system in the operational area of the port of Callao to LED lighting, thus reducing another 15% of emissions. In 2021, they stopped emitting more than 1,000 tons of CO2eq, by digitalizing a large part of their processes and applying operational efficiencies. Thanks to the agreement with Enel, they expect to stop emitting at least 3,300 tons of CO2eq by the end of this year.

In order to achieve carbon neutrality, over the next seven years DP World Callao will incorporate, by 2024,

20 electric trucks with their own solar panel charging station, as well as more electric yard cranes. By 2026, replace 30 trucks from diesel to electric. In 2027, replace 6 RTG yard cranes to electric. In 2029, it will replace another 11 trucks to electric. Finally, in 2030, it will convert 9 more cranes to electric. Residual emissions, estimated at less than 2,000 tCO2eq, will be offset.

“In January (2024) we are going to receive 20 internal circulation terminal trucks (ITVs), which are going to be electric. We are going to be the first port terminal in the world to have such a large fleet of electric trucks,” Nicolás Gauthier, CEO of DP World Peru.

DP World Callao's commitment to reduce its impact has not only led it to become the first terminal in Peru to voluntarily report its carbon emissions, but also to obtain the third star of the “Peru Carbon Footprint” program in 2022 for managing and reducing its emissions for two consecutive years. In May of this year, DP World, which operates more than 60 ports and terminals worldwide, recognized its Callao operation as one of the two best ports in the world, along with the port of Busan, South Korea.
