B-Day Lima: “The private sector is an actor of change in our society in the face of climate change”.”

In the framework of the B Day for Climate Action, an event that brought together companies implementing sustainable initiatives, the Minister of the Environment, Lucía Ruíz, highlighted the strategic role of private organizations in facing the challenges of Climate Change as a country.

“The private sector is an actor of change in our society. Sustainability is a transversal management model in the various lines of business,” he remarked.

The head of the sector began the presentation by giving examples of sustainable private initiatives. “Fishing companies have modified their processes to take advantage of their waste and generate new inputs that constitute an economic opportunity for them,” she said.

He also highlighted the coordinated work of companies that form alliances to share resources, in the so-called “business symbiosis”, “A company in the paper industry and a beverage corporation joined forces to take advantage of the water discarded by the bottling plant and used by the other to process cardboard and paper”, he said.

For her part, María Paz Cigarán, general manager of the environmental consultancy Libélula, raised during her presentation the seriousness of the context of Climate Change and made a call to action for companies in the context of COP25, visualizing the opportunities along the way. “We have a common goal not to exceed 1.5 °C as the limit for average global temperature increase,” he said.

He also emphasized the commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030 and the initiative for a delegation of B companies to publicly announce the declaration of climate emergency and the failure of the system in the scenario of the COP25 in Santiago, Chile, to be held from December 2 to 13.
