Sustainable transportation: Peruvian companies advance in innovation

From May 10 to 13, the event was held in Lima, Peru. Sustainable Transportation,The event was attended by different national and international companies to discuss the advances and challenges that exist in the different modes of transportation that use environmentally friendly energy for their operation. The event also featured an exhibition, through which different innovations in the field of sustainable transportation were presented. 

Collaboration to achieve decarbonization 

During the meeting, the following panel was held The automotive sector and its offer of sustainable vehicles, The event was moderated by Marian Buraschi, Libélula's commercial manager. 

Buraschi opened the panel by stating that “We have the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases to 50% in the next decade, and scientists tell us that we have to make a drastic reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels and move towards electrification in a decisive way, and opt for alternatives such as green hydrogen; companies have a huge responsibility because they must reduce their emissions and offer solutions for citizens and economies.

Alexandra Bonnemaison, general manager of Audi Peru, said that it is essential to observe the carbon footprint in order to reduce it.“As we are part of an important industry for Peru, we must help each other to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, because it is everyone's responsibility”.”.

Vladimir Centurião, commercial vice-president of Toyota Peru, explained that the company's priority is to decarbonize and become carbon neutral by 2050. “For this we work with technological diversity, we are committed to accessibility and massification, which is why the joint participation of the government, industry and society is important.”

Alejandro Ruiz de Somocurcio, Volvo's premium brand commercial manager, explained that, at present, “We are talking about collaboration rather than competition. We are an industry that has been working together, taking firm actions to achieve a better world, with sustainable solutions, and with purpose.”

Toyota: circular economy to expand markets 

David Caro, marketing, corporate affairs and ESG manager of Toyota del Perú, explained that the company is focused on being carbon neutral throughout the life cycle of the creation of its products, thus contributing to Peru's commitment to reduce 40% of emissions by 2030.
“We are looking to reduce emissions at suppliers, vehicle manufacturing, logistics, dealerships, and opt for recycling. It must be a circular cycle that helps us reduce emissions throughout the process, leaving no one behind.”, said Caro

At the event, Toyota del Perú presented its hybrid electric vehicle that combines two engines: combustion and electric, which used together optimize fuel consumption; and also avoids up to 40% of CO2 emissions, compared to a conventional vehicle according to the analysis conducted by Toyota del Perú. The company also presented several products that are part of the circular economy project developed in partnership with students of the industrial design specialty of the Faculty of Art and Design of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. 

Evelyn Wetzell, head of public relations and social responsibility at Toyota del Perú, explained that with the support of Libélula they decided to give a new use to disused automotive parts and accessories that end up in a landfill, but now they can generate new products such as tables, grills, lamps, among other items or accessories, which they hope to offer to the domestic market by the end of 2023. “We believe that sustainability goes in all aspects and products from our hybrid vehicles, to natural gas, and everything that can be created by giving a new use to what used to be considered waste. The idea is to reduce waste, pollution, and bet on innovation,” he concluded.  Wetzell.

During the event, representatives from Minera Condestable and Ferreyros also participated, who talked about mining and the challenges facing sustainability; likewise, Delfin Logistics shared its experience in cargo and goods transportation in a context of sustainability.
