Statkraft, a Norwegian state-owned hydroelectric company, has been developing wind and solar projects throughout South America. In Peru, tests are already underway for upcoming renewable energy developments.
Juan Antonio Rozas, country manager of Statkraft Peru, pointed out that there is a whole organization working on the development of solar and wind projects. He also pointed out that they are targeting greenfield initiatives due to the scarcity of purchase options for this type of power plants in Peru.
Statkraft currently has two projects, but the idea is to have a portfolio of at least five or six projects in the medium term. The initiatives are still in the study phase and a hypothetical construction would start in 2025.
On the other hand, Rozas said that solar projects are less complex to build; however, wind power plants offer a specific advantage, not only to the company, but also to the country. Wind power plants can seasonally complement hydroelectric plants, which leave a vacuum in times of low water levels. It should be noted that in Peru, electricity generation is 60% hydro.
Finally, regarding the possibility of incorporating more hydroelectric capacity, Rozas explained that they are not contemplating more greenfield projects, but they could evaluate acquisitions, although he said that there are few offers.
