It took place in November 2021. During the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP). ICMM, the umbrella organization for more than 27 mining and metals companies and more than 35 national, regional and commodity member associations, made public its commitment to achieve zero net GHG emissions by 2050.
To achieve this objective, the ICMM proposes that each member establishes its emissions reduction plans based on the industry in which it operates and the place where it operates. In this sense, a staged and phased approach is proposed, which seeks to reduce Scope 1 (direct), 2 (indirect) and 3 (other indirect emissions) emissions. The reduction targets established by each ICMM member for Scope 3 should be ready by 2023, in accordance with the commitment subscribed.
"As Minsur, we have been part of the ICMM since 2018, but we have been measuring our carbon footprint since 2017 -following ISO 14064-1 and GHG Protocol standards- and we also have external validations," specifies Alberto Ugarteche, Corporate Environmental Manager at Minsur.
Methods and objectives
The commitment subscribed by Minsur at COP 26 contemplates the use of robust methodologies, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, to set emission reduction targets. This information collected must also be disclosed in a transparent manner, so that the public is informed about compliance with the targets for the 3 types of emissions. In this regard, we also employ the use of advanced analytics to reduce emissions and energy consumption in general, and we encourage and promote the use of clean or renewable energies in campuses and operations, through innovations for cleaner and safer vehicles, for example.
Ugarteche points out that the bidding process for contracting a strategic partner to help draw up the roadmap to be followed to achieve a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 or earlier, and to reach net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, has already been completed. "We are now going to define the steps to be taken to achieve the decarbonization goals we have set ourselves," he concludes.
