Telefónica Hispanoamérica's “Roadmap 100% for Renewable Energy to 2030” project was recognized as one of the 500 best initiatives of the X Edition of the Green Awards. These awards connect and amplify the most important social and environmental projects around the world. In this edition, more than 3,000 initiatives from 33 countries applied.
With the “100% Renewable Energy Roadmap to 2030” project, the company developed a comprehensive plan for the purchase, generation and certification of renewable energy in the region. In 2022, more than 49% of the energy consumed at our facilities came from this source, and we will continue to work to meet our goal of 100% by 2030.
“At Telefónica we work to deploy a telecommunications infrastructure that allows us to meet the demands of the daily lives of people and society in general, extending connectivity and promoting digitalization as pillars aligned with our raison d'être as a company. In this sense, our operation is based on a Responsible Business Plan that includes an environmental strategy designed to achieve the sustainability of our operations and promote a greener future,” said Andrea Folgueiras, Telefónica Hispam's Chief Technology Officer.
The company's environmental strategy seeks to minimize the impact generated by its digital products and services, as well as to maximize their environmental benefits. In this regard, in recent years we have strengthened our commitments to help limit the global temperature increase to 1.5ºC and validated our net-zero emissions targets under the new Science Based Targets (SBTi) standard, going beyond the Paris Agreement.
Greener operations
At the end of 2021, Telefónica in its 8 operations in Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela), consumed electricity for about 1,690 GWh/year. It should be noted that both Peru and Chile already have 100% of renewable energy and work is being carried out along the same lines in other countries in the region.
It is worth noting that Telefónica is part of “RE100”, a global and collaborative initiative of companies committed to 100% of renewable electricity. In this sense, as a large consumer of electricity, we contribute to countries to generate more clean energy. To this end, we implement long-term power purchase agreements with electricity companies, promote the production of alternative energies by purchasing international renewable energy certificates (iRECs), and contribute to the construction of small solar power plants at our power plants and self-generate energy at some of our radio bases.
At Telefónica Hispanoamérica we are aware of our responsibility to promote a global movement against climate change and we will continue working to build a digital and greener future.
