Global emissions reductions: COVID-19 has not been sufficient

This year, carbon emissions were expected to be drastically reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the quarantine, carbon emissions decreased by 17% at the beginning of 2020. However, according to a new report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), emissions, this has had little impact on the continued increase in atmospheric concentrations of GHGs. This report estimates that this year we would be emitting 47 rather than 51 billion tons of CO2 (a reduction of only 8%) globally.
