Lima, August 18, 2022Mibanco, the leading microfinance bank in Latin America and the second largest player worldwide, announces its corporate commitment to be the first bank specializing in microfinance to achieve carbon neutrality by 2032.
Within the framework of its sustainability strategies, Mibanco has defined concrete actions focused on prioritizing 6 thematic axes: Greenhouse Gas (GHG), water, energy, paper, solid waste and Transportation; as well as raising awareness, sensitizing and training all employees on environmental and climate change issues; so that we can ensure an eco-efficient and sustainable operation, committing to an annual reduction of 10% of emissions, taking as a base year the measurement of 2022, until reaching carbon neutrality in 2032. In this way, the bank's environmental policy aims to contribute to the care of the environment.
One of the main actions for the efficient use of energy being carried out since 2020 is the implementation of solar panels in branches in Lima and the province. To date, Mibanco is the first bank that has implemented 22 agencies in Lima and the province with photovoltaic panels, achieving that 32% of the energy used comes from a sustainable source.
"As a leading company in the Mypes segment, we are aware that we have an important role to play in society. We know that our goal of being carbon neutral by 2032 is a great challenge, but we have a work plan on several fronts that will allow us to achieve it. Therefore, Mibanco has been taking action and identifying opportunities to become increasingly eco-efficient, minimizing the emissions generated by business operations," said Jessica Iriarte, Manager of the Administration and Operations area of Mibanco.
On the other hand, a fundamental part of this environmental management plan is follow-up and monitoring, which allows us to measure the progress of the bank's commitment. Thanks to this, Mibanco has obtained its Second Star from the 'Carbon Footprint Peru' (HC-Peru) Program of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), which recognizes and certifies the measurement of the carbon footprint by an independent entity that validates its management to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
"Obtaining this second star in the Carbon Footprint program is an indicator that we are following the right path for our environmental objective. This encourages us to continue developing new initiatives that allow us to contribute to the care of the planet," added Iriarte.
In order to achieve carbon neutrality, Mibanco is moving forward with its environmental performance plan for the sustainable development of the country from the financial sphere, reaffirming its active commitment to the environment and its surroundings.
