Ferreyros, Unimaq and Orvisa, Caterpillar representatives, reduce and offset their carbon footprint

- Leading machinery companies and the parent company Ferreycorp obtain the highest rating (Four Stars) in Minam's Carbon Footprint platform.
- In the last two years, emissions from central locations of the corporation and its companies were reduced by more than 35%.

Ferreyros, Unimaq and Orvisa, Caterpillar's representatives in Peru, have been showing a sustained reduction of their carbon footprint and, at the same time, offsetting their emissions through the protection of forests in the country via carbon credits. These actions, together with the measurement and verification of their footprint, allowed them to achieve the highest rating (Four Stars) in the Carbon Footprint Peru platform of the Ministry of the Environment.

The distinction to these leading companies in their industries, as well as to the parent company Ferreycorp, integrates the results achieved at Ferreyros' main workshop headquarters; at its central warehouse location; at its offices in Lima and Ferreycorp's institutional headquarters; at Unimaq's headquarters; and at three important Orvisa locations in the Amazon region, all of them in their most recent completed evaluation, in 2019. The 2020 evaluation is in process.

In the last two years, about ten facilities of Ferreycorp and its companies, including Soltrak's headquarters, reduced their carbon emissions by more than 35%, as a whole, in their scopes 1 and 2. More and more locations are joining the management, such as the Ferreyros Operations Complex in La Joya, Arequipa -second largest workshop center, which has been using solar energy-, which has measured and verified its emissions for the first time, with the goal of a subsequent reduction and offsetting.

Road in progress

"We are committed to reducing our emissions significantly, joining Peru's reduction target for 2030. We started on this path a few years ago by measuring the footprint of our institutional premises; then, we consolidated our emissions management in an important set of operating locations; and today, we are committed to expanding our scope more and more, with the management of new headquarters," said Patricia Gastelumendi Lukis, corporate finance manager of Ferreycorp.

As part of its footprint management, Ferreycorp and its companies acquired carbon credits for the 2018 and 2019 periods, to contribute to the protection of nearly 500 hectares of forest -equivalent to 283,000 trees- of the Tambopata-Bahuaja Sonene National Reserve conservation project, and are in the process of acquiring new credits for the 2020 period.

The corporation and its companies are also focused on acquiring renewable energy for their operations. As of 2020, 55% of the electricity consumed by the corporation in Peru comes from hydroelectric sources, thanks to the adoption of this type of energy in highly relevant locations. This proportion is expected to rise to 70% next year, due to the adoption of this type of energy at new sites.

News

The drivers of the light vehicles used by Ferreyros, Unimaq and Orvisa are being trained in good eco-efficient driving practices to reduce their carbon footprint. Subsequent training will be provided to forklift operators at the companies' warehouses and to the suppliers who transport cargo.
