The evolution of climate action: much more than emissions reductions

By: Sarah Franciscolo - Manager of nexos+1

The conclusion of the Paris Agreement eight years ago put the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to keep our planet at 1.5°C on the business agenda. At the end of 2022, 196 countries concluded another historic agreement, this time in favor of biodiversity and natural ecosystems, with the goals of protecting and conserving at least 30% of the planet's land and oceans, and restoring another 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

If you don't know or don't manage the impact of your operations on nature, it's time to do so. The climate and biodiversity agendas are interconnected, as terrestrial ecosystems and oceans are the only carbon sequestration solutions we have at scale today. The Forum will delve into this topic and the path to restoring nature through regenerative business models.

Adaptation to climate change is equally urgent, especially in our Latin American region, as we are not prepared for the climate impacts that are already occurring and will increase in the future. It is vital to increase our resilience now to cope with the impacts of extreme weather events and changes in temperature and precipitation.
We are not prepared for the climate impacts that are already occurring and will increase in the future.

Climate change must be integrated into the company's risk management, considering the physical risks of climate change and also the risks of the transition to a low-carbon economy. We will address this topic in plenary and in workshops at the Forum, in order to provide Latin American companies with the information they need to initiate their climate adaptation strategy.

In terms of short- and medium-term climate action, we offer recommendations through the example of Latin American and global cases on how to scale impact across the value chain, the use of carbon credits on the path to net zero and the energy transition in operations.

Through the five free virtual workshops, Forum participants will take away knowledge and tools for climate management. likeThe following are available: a self-diagnosis of business climate maturity, a toolkit for integrating adaptation into business strategy, guidance on developing a climate action plan, guidance on climate disclosure of the TCFD framework and a methodology for measuring emissions financed in the investment portfolio.
