ECOS: The strategy that transforms waste management into social and environmental value

An urban challenge that calls for new responses

Thousands of people cross the aisles of offices and shopping malls every day, and behind each day there is waste that often goes unnoticed. However, in a country that generates close to 8.7 million tons of municipal waste per year, of which only the 2.72 % is valorized While 39 % ends up in informal dumps, Urbanova decided to take on a different role and propose a solution. In this context, the ECOS, a comprehensive strategy for Urbanova which seeks to transform the way in which waste is managed and build a culture where materials are not discarded, but find a new purpose.  

Results that turn into real impact

During the 2025, ECOS allowed recover 108 tons of waste in common areas of Urbanova's corporate buildings. In its shopping centers, the results were a milestone: more than 14 tons of organic waste were recovered in food courts and 2.8 tons of plastic bottles were recovered in corridors and high traffic areas. But the impact does not end there. Thanks to strategic alliances with organizations such as Jireh, Sinba and Khana, the recovered waste is now being recycled. are transformed into products with social impactThe company's products: blankets that sheltered vulnerable communities, recycled cardboard desks for educational projects and sustainable materials made with high percentages of recovered content. What was once considered waste, today returns converted into well-being and opportunity for those who need it most. 

The value of alliances to generate change

The development of ECOS has also been possible thanks to the joint work with strategic allies committed to social innovation. Among them, the following stand out Contribute, Breca's social impact platform, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, has accompanied the design and evolution of the initiative from a people-centered perspective.

Through a data-driven methodological approach and people-centered design, Aporta contributed to co-create a strategy capable of transforming segregation habits of waste from thousands of visitors to Urbanova's corporate and commercial destinations. This collaboration has made it possible to turn sustainability into an everyday action, making it easier for more people to actively participate in waste recovery and strengthening the positive impact generated by ECOS.

A cultural change driving the road to 2030

ECOS has also transformed the dynamics within the organization's urban destinations. The recycling stations naturally integrated into their offices and shopping centers, promoting cleaner and more orderly spaces, and strengthening the culture of sustainability in its business community. This environment generates well-being, collaboration and productivity, and reinforces Urbanova's role as a strategic partner that facilitates responsible day-to-day practices.
