Lima Expresa presents its Sustainability Report 2024: moving towards a more connected and sustainable city
- More than S/ 43 million invested in infrastructure maintenance, a 74% reduction in accidents since 2016 and a firm commitment to environmental sustainability and equity mark the year's milestones.
- The concessionaire presented its sixth sustainability report, prepared under the European CSRD and ESRS guidelines, and aligned with the international GRI standard.
Lima Expressa subsidiary of VINCI Highways and concessionaire of the Vía de Evitamiento and Vía Expresa Línea Amarilla, presented its sixth Sustainability Report, which consolidates its main activities for 2024. Lima Expresa's report focuses on four pillars: infrastructure and technology, operational performance, commitment to the environment and responsible management, and talent development.
Investment in infrastructure and technology
Lima Expresa allocated more than S/ 43 million to infrastructure maintenance, including the de-silting of the Rímac River, the renovation of railings on 18 pedestrian bridges and the final phase of the Zarumilla slope reinforcement project. This project aimed to optimize the climate resilience of the infrastructure in one of the busiest areas of the concession, which runs very close to the Rimac River.
In addition, the concessionaire socialized the action plan for 10 infrastructure projects to reduce traffic congestion on its roads.
Among the innovation milestones, 2024 presented the automated toll system, which now has 12 booths dedicated exclusively to contactless digital payments, located on the Via de Evitamiento and the Linea Amarilla expressway. Likewise, the automated incident detection system powered by AI and Big Data, implemented in the Lima Expresa Operations Control Center, was recognized with the Creatividad Empresarial 2024 award in the Process Innovation category.
Operational performance
In 2024, a 74% reduction in serious road accidents was achieved since 2016, thanks to a comprehensive strategy to ensure traffic flow and safety. 12,149 road assistances and 114 operations were carried out in conjunction with SUTRAN and the PNP.
As a concessionaire operating in an urban environment, we face challenges such as the waste problem in the city. In 2024 alone, Lima Expresa managed more than 7,400 tons of waste along its 25 km concession; 99.43% of this waste was generated by third parties (residential, street vendors or commercial sources).
Another challenge is traffic congestion at bus stops along the Via de Evitamiento. Since May 2024, the concessionaire has had an agreement with the ATU to improve road safety and traffic flow at seven stops along the Via de Evitamiento. Comparing the periods February-April 2024 and May-July 2024 (before and after the agreement), there was a 23% reduction in traffic incidents and a time saving of up to 8% for drivers traveling through these seven areas supervised by the ATU.
Commitment to the environment
In line with VINCI Highways' environmental policy, Lima Expresa has continued its efforts to reduce its climate, waste and water footprint.
Emissions: CO₂eq emissions were reduced by 41% compared to 2018, in line with the target of 51% by 2030. Three diesel cranes were replaced with NGV-powered cranes, and a second solar PV system was installed at the El Pino toll station.
For the fourth consecutive year, the company acquired carbon credits from the REDD+ Castañeros de Bosques Amazónicos (BAM) project, avoiding 845 tons of CO₂eq.
Waste: 49.5% of the company's own waste was recovered or reused. We confirmed our goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030 and committing to a circular economy approach. In 2024, Lima Expresa implemented eco-points in all its operational bases and administrative offices to properly segregate different types of waste. In addition, the concessionaire has an agreement with Recidar, a partner that manages obsolete or unused materials to reuse them and prevent them from becoming waste.
Water: Water usage was reduced by more than 55% compared to 2018, exceeding VINCI Highways' goal of halving water consumption. During 2024, Lima Expresa performed a vegetation replacement and implemented a drip irrigation system powered by a photovoltaic system. As part of the vegetation change, American grass was replaced with aptenias, a species that requires less water consumption.
