In its 35th year, ISM shares its main initiatives and sustainable impacts

For 35 years, ISM has sought to be a company that transcends history, offering quality beverages at competitive prices, respecting the environment and contributing to society.

There is no doubt that, over the years, companies are being asked to make greater commitments to sustainability. In a reality in which the effects of climate change are becoming more and more noticeable, companies are being required to make greater commitments to sustainability. climate change (such as rising temperatures, scarcity of food and natural resources, and the disappearance of species), concrete efforts are urgently needed to ensure that today's development does not negatively impact future generations.

In that task, many companies are incorporating environmental, social and governance principles into their business structures, while aligning their strategies to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations, which seek to improve the quality of life of populations and mitigate the dangerous effects related to climate change.

An example of this is San Miguel Industries (ISM), which for 35 years has been promoting the triple bottom line: economic, environmental and social. During this time, the company has maintained a firm commitment to protect the environment and prevent pollution through continuous improvements in its processes and the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources in its operations.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Guided by its sustainability strategy, this year ISM has expanded the scope of its Integrated Management System - IMS to the Lima offices and the northern and southern operating centers, and has maintained its ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. In this way they have been able to guarantee the correct execution of processes and controls, complying with legal requirements and minimizing the environmental impact of their operations.

On the same path of improving the sustainability of its actions, in June 2021 ISM signed the Clean Production Agreement with MINAM and PRODUCE, through which they assumed seven voluntary commitments associated with good solid waste management. In addition to this measure, the company committed to train 500 customers and 70% employees, and to reduce the weight of plastic bottles of brands such as Kola Real, Sabor de Oro, Agua Cielo and Kris.

As part of its sustainability strategy, ISM has focused on five Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the United Nations: Clean Water and Sanitation; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; and Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.

MAJOR IMPACTS

Industrias San Miguel is convinced that sustainability is an issue that must be worked on together and for the benefit of society as a whole. Therefore, it has programs such as ISM Entrepreneurs, which trains employees' wives so that they can develop their own businesses.

In addition, through the Talleres de Valores (Values Workshops) initiative, we promote the formation of values in children and young people through cartoons in public schools, hospitals and shelters in different cities throughout the country. In addition to these programs, Mejorando mi Bodega has strengthened the capacities of more than 50,000 winemakers in its areas of influence. In addition, 31 webinars have been held during 2022.

The company also dedicates efforts to education, organizing the Forum of Journalists and Social Responsibility FOPER, in which prominent journalists and communication students in their final years update their knowledge and reinforce their environmental awareness.

Among the great achievements obtained, in 2022 ISM obtained for the second consecutive year the Socially Responsible Company Distinction, competing with a total of 57 companies. In this edition, it achieved 81.1 points out of a possible 100. The company also reports on sustainability under GRI standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and HACCP). We measure carbon footprint and water footprint in our production plants, we have 2 stars awarded by MINAM, and we are about to obtain the blue certificate from the National Water Authority.

This has allowed them to participate in the Competitive Business Programwhose objectives are: to raise awareness and develop the capacity of SMEs to manage and communicate their impacts through sustainability reporting, to foster an environment conducive to sustainability reporting at the public and private levels, and to promote informed decision making through the use of sustainability data. Currently, 15 ISM supplier companies have been able to produce their own sustainability reports.

Taking action and working in a responsible use of resources is a way to protect the planet and benefit society. Therefore, it is essential that more companies join the change and work to reduce the impact of their operations.
