Peru Carbon Footprint Platform highlights Ferreycorp and five of its companies

This new initiative of the Ministry of the Environment highlights the management of companies that have been measuring, validating, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions.

Ferreycorp and its companies Ferreyros, Unimaq, Orvisa, Motored and Soltrak were recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, through the new Carbon Footprint Peru platform, for their achievements in the management of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. This is the corporate group with the most stars -or recognitions- registered in this platform.

The parent company and its companies Unimaq, Orvisa and Motored were recognized with the highest rating after measuring, validating, reducing and offsetting their carbon emissions in several of their main facilities and becoming carbon neutral in their scopes 1 and 2. Ferreyros, the corporation's flagship company, was recognized for reducing its GHG emissions by 14% in its main workshop complex, located in Lima Industrial.

For its part, the parent company Ferreycorp - which began measuring its carbon footprint in 2016 - reduced emissions by 25% from its administrative premises, in Surco, and its headquarters in Callao, which hosts important logistics and training operations of its subsidiaries. In turn, Unimaq, Motored and Orvisa reduced the GHG emissions of their main premises, and Soltrak was recognized for having measured and validated the emissions of its main headquarters, located in Callao.

“We are inspired to be part of this platform and to contribute to Peru's commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 40% by 2030. Our efforts are part of our commitment to sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices. We are excited to achieve the highest ratings on this platform, which has more than 300 registered companies, a third of which are already reporting and measuring their climate action initiatives,” said Patricia Gastelumendi, corporate finance manager of Ferreycorp.

Carbon footprint offsetting

As part of their carbon footprint offsetting efforts, Ferreycorp, Unimaq, Motored and Orvisa acquired carbon credits to contribute to the conservation of protected natural areas in the Peruvian Amazon.

These are two projects to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+): the conservation of the Cordillera Azul National Park, which comprises 1.4 million hectares of Amazonian forests; and the project “Forest management to reduce deforestation and degradation in the Shipibo Conibo indigenous communities of the Ucayali region”.

 Multiple environmental initiatives

Ferreycorp and its subsidiaries have managed to reduce energy and water consumption in offices, workshops and warehouses through changes to more efficient lighting systems and water saving systems, among other initiatives. Also noteworthy is the use of solar energy at Ferreyros, the corporation's main company, in its Component Repair Center (CRC) located in La Joya, Arequipa, dedicated to mining.

At the same time, the company is committed to the circular economy of the product. For example, Ferreyros has been totally rebuilding machinery for several years, including mining shovels weighing 140,000 tons, giving them a second life. In this way, it reduces the environmental footprint of the equipment it sells, reducing the generation of waste related to the disposal of equipment and the use of materials that would be required to manufacture new machines.

The corporation also promotes careful waste management among its companies. For example, it recycles scrap metal, oils, packaging, and other recyclable materials from imported goods through specialized waste management entities.

Ferreycorp continues to work on improving the eco-efficiency indicators of its operations, for which it has created a working group to share best practices among its companies and centralize guidelines.
