- For the second consecutive year, Movistar received the I-REC and AENOR international certifications for operating with 100% renewable energy in its own facilities throughout the country.
- In 2019, it was recognized as the first telecommunications company in Peru to achieve certification for renewable energy use, operating sustainably and complying with environmental standards.
Movistar Peru received international certifications from I-REC and AENOR that ensure the renewable origin of 100% of electricity from Statkraft Peru's hydroelectric generation plants, used in all its operations in the country. In this sense, it confirmed that it reduced its carbon footprint by 92% by 2021 (CO2 emissions) compared to the base year 2015, in accordance with its Renewable Energy Plan (whose objective is to be 100% renewable by 2030) and with the purpose of contributing to lessen the effects of climate change.
"We are committed to continue promoting the consumption of clean energy to contribute to the care of the environment and the well-being of our society. By 2021 we have reduced CO2 emissions by 92% compared to the base year 2015, we are firmly committed to continue improving our competitiveness and sustainability, we will continue to ensure the efficient use of renewable energies that reduce CO2 emissions and the environmental footprint of our activities," said Cesar Mino, Network Maintenance Manager of Movistar Peru.
It should also be noted that, to date, the company has 96 self-generation stations throughout Peru, which use non-conventional renewable energy solutions with smart grid networks, solar panels and wind power. The company also has an Energy Efficiency Program to reduce CO2 emissions efficiently and safely.
During 2021, initiatives were carried out that allowed savings of 20,070 MWh, in addition, from 2015 to 2021, the total energy consumption (MWh) per unit of traffic was reduced by 88.7%, that is, despite the almost 10-fold increase in traffic, energy only increased by 11%. These initiatives include: 1) the activation of the energy saving function in the controllers of cellular base stations in the departments of La Libertad, Piura, Arequipa, Cajamarca and Junín, 2) the Tukuy 2021 Plan, with which legacy equipment for fixed access, mobile, core voice, core mobile, core IP, transport and platforms was shut down.
In addition, air conditioning efficiency initiatives were promoted through the identification and shutdown of refrigeration equipment in some environments of fixed network stations and efficient configuration of working temperature in refrigeration equipment in remote units, 4) energy efficiency projects were promoted in buildings, renegotiation of the contract for the purchase of energy in the free market, more efficient management of invoices with the independence of technical and commercial electrical installations in rented premises, regularization of contracted power in BT6 supplies, identification and cancellation of unused electrical supplies.
In the last six years, Telefónica's worldwide energy consumption has been reduced by 7.2%, while traffic has multiplied by up to 6.7 times. During the past year, Telefónica del Perú decreased its total energy consumption by 2.24% compared to 2020, which involves fuel consumption in vehicles, operations and electricity consumption in the free market, regulated and self-generation.
Leading the way to a greener, more efficient and sustainable future
In addition, Movistar Peru stands out in the telecommunications market by offering technology solutions and developing environmental projects that allow companies and citizens to reduce their energy consumption and, therefore, their carbon footprint. In this sense, the company has implemented the new seal "Movistar Peru".Eco Rating", a labeling methodology that promotes the responsible consumption of mobile devices by providing consumers with accurate information on the environmental impact of the equipment.
