Toyota: the first electrified vehicle was introduced in Peru 15 years ago

Fifteen years ago, Toyota del Peru marked a significant milestone with the arrival of the first electrified vehicle in the country: the Prius model. Since then, the company has strengthened its commitment with the introduction of multiple technologies, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV).

"Before introducing a new technology in a market, we take into account various factors, such as the charging infrastructure, the market's energy matrix based on natural gas, and the needs of customers. To achieve an equitable transition that leaves no one behind and considering the different needs of each market, in Peru we have opted for hybrid electric technology and natural gas vehicles," said David Caro, Corporate Affairs & ESG manager of Toyota del Perú.

During the event celebrating 15 years of electrification in Peru, Toyota shared its global vision of achieving carbon neutrality throughout the life cycle of its vehicles by 2050. To achieve these objectives of offering a sustainable, practical and accessible solution, the leading brand in the automotive sector has articulated a strategy focused on raising awareness of the characteristics of this technology and its impact on the environment.

"Decarbonization is part of Toyota's vision and we define this vision in the environmental area as Beyond Zero. And Beyond Zero means that we really want to reduce carbon emissions to a zero level," said Rafael Chang, CEO of Latin America and the Caribbean, during the event.

According to calculations made by the environmental consulting firm Libélula, the sale of hybrid and natural gas vehicles in Peru avoids the emission of more than 969,000 tons of CO2 This is equivalent to the amount of carbon that would be absorbed by more than 1,700 hectares of forest. In addition, the increased availability of hybrid electric versions has generated savings in public health costs equivalent to more than S/6 million.

In 2023, Toyota del Peru managed to sell more than 4,400 electrified vehicles, positioning itself as the leader and pioneer of this technology. "By 2030, the goal is to market 8,000 electrified vehicles, of which 96% will be hybrid electric vehicles (HEV)," said Takuo Muto, executive president & CEO of Toyota del Perú. The company's objective is to fight against the common enemy: carbon.

Aware of market needs and its commitment to sustainability, Toyota del Perú will continue to promote the adoption of electrified technologies in the country. In this context, electric hybrids and natural gas vehicles are presented as key solutions to move towards a cleaner and more efficient mobility.
