- Anglo American and ENGIE Energía Perú sign agreements for their current contracts to convert supply to 100% renewable, as well as a new contract, starting in 2029, and for 8 years, with a supply based on 100% in green energy.
- Quellaveco, a copper project developed by Anglo American and Mitsubishi Corporation, becomes the first mining operation to promote the construction of a non-conventional renewable energy plant.
- The required energy will come from ENGIE Energía Perú's renewable energy sources, especially from the future wind power plant “Punta Lomitas”, whose construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2021.

The global mining company, Anglo American, announced the signing of agreements with ENGIE Energy Peru to convert the total electricity supply of its Quellaveco project (187 MW) to 100% green power. The agreement contemplates converting its current contracts to renewable supply, and starting in 2029 and for a term of eight years, a green 100% power supply contract (for 150 MW).

With this type of supply contract or Green PPA (Green Power Purchase Agreement), Anglo American becomes the first mining company in the world to promote the construction of a non-conventional renewable energy plant to employ 100% renewable energy in its operations. The Quellaveco project is currently under construction in the Moquegua region.

The electricity covered by the Supply Agreement (187 MW) will be 100% green and will be backed by renewable energy sources of ENGIE Energy Peru, in particular of its future Punta Lomitas“ Wind Power Plant”, The project consists of the construction of a wind farm with a combined nominal capacity of 260 MW located in Ocucaje-Ica, and a 60 kilometer transmission line that will connect the plant to the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN).

To date, the Punta Lomitas Project has the definitive generation and transmission concession granted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2021.

“We are working in different areas to contribute to a healthy environment. Our goal is to transform the very nature of industry to ensure a safer, cleaner and more sustainable future. By using more precise technologies, such as those that Quellaveco will have, as well as focusing on consuming less energy and less water, we will reduce our environmental footprint for every kilo of copper we produce from 2022 onwards,” said Tom McCulley, CEO of Anglo American in Peru.

“Thanks to the renewable energy certificates delivered by the Punta Lomitas power plant to supply the demand of the Quellaveco project, we are proud and committed to accompany our client Anglo American and mining in Peru on its path towards carbon neutrality,” said Rik De Buyserie, CEO of ENGIE Energía Perú.
