According to the report EY's Global Climate Risk Barometer,
 more companies globally are reporting on their weather risk. However, they have yet to make most significant disclosures in terms of the challenges they are facing. 

The sectors with greater exposure to transitional risk, such as Energy and Insurancehave received higher scores on their disclosures.

The event was attended by the Minister of the Environment, Wilbert Gabriel Rozas, the Deputy Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources, Fey Yamina Silva, the Deputy Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Peru, Sandy Scott, and the Manager of Social Responsibility and Culture of Británico, Gabriela Aguilar.

As part of the Multisectoral Management Plan for the development of the future Bicentennial City, led by the Ministry of the Environment, a forestation project is being developed with the reuse of treated wastewater. A vegetation zone of 2,000 hectares that will add to Lima approximately 60% of public green areas that the city currently has, and will have a forest wall connected to the coastal hills. The planting will positively contribute to this project.

Británico's Social Responsibility Manager, Gabriela Aguilar said “More than 100 BRITÁNICO students participated in this massive tree planting, who planted the trees as part of the “Británico Green” environmental volunteer program, which seeks to raise awareness and educate students on environmental issues and is one of the actions carried out by BRITÁNICO as part of its environmental strategy”. 

UK Deputy Ambassador Sandy Scott added. “The purpose of the Queen's Green Canopy is to plant sustainability, thus leaving a legacy that will benefit future generations. In addition, this adds to the National Botanical Garden initiative, which we have been supporting since 2028 along with other organizations. Peru has one of the largest and richest biodiversities in the world, and it is very important that it can count on a network of botanical gardens to help conserve it, develop scientific research and generate collective awareness of its importance.”.

Within the framework of the Queen's Green Canopy, the British Embassy has planted a tree at the British Residence and another at the headquarters of the British Embassy in San Juan de Lurigancho, with the participation of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Gavin Cook, on both occasions.

Thus, Telefónica is committed to achieving net zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2040, which implies an effective reduction of at least 90% of all its emissions (direct and indirect) and to neutralize the remaining emissions (less than 10%) through high quality carbon credits.

As an intermediate target, Telefónica will reduce absolute GHG emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 80% and 56% in Scope 3 (value chain) by 2030.

In six years, the company has decreased by more than 40% all its emissions (by 70% for Scope 1+2 since 2015,and by 27% for Scope 3 since 2016).

Telefónica is ahead of the 2050 net-zero emissions target proposed by the United Nations and the Paris Agreement.

“The protection of the environment is a priority issue for Telefónica, We are working to curb climate change and reverse biodiversity loss. The fact that our emissions reduction targets are validated by SBTi according to the new ‘Net-Zero Standard’ demonstrates the company's commitment to lead the energy and digital transition, as both go hand in hand to build a greener future for everyone,” said Elena Valderrábano, Global Head of Sustainability at Telefónica.

The SBTi is calling on companies around the world to align with its ‘Net-Zero Standard’ to accelerate immediate corporate emissions reductions. As of today, there are only 34 companies with approved net-zero targets, including Telefónica, and more than 1,000 committed.

The Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative is a global body, in partnership with CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and one of the commitments of the We Mean Business Coalition, which enables companies to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It aims to accelerate companies around the world to halve their emissions by 2030 and achieve net emissions by 2050.

Climate Action Plan

To ensure compliance with emission reduction targets, Telefónica has integrated these targets into its governance model through its Climate Action Plan in which it defines how its existing assets, operations and business model are aligned with the most ambitious scientific climate recommendations.

It quantifies the company's GHG emissions and defines its objectives and specific actions, with associated KPIs, both for the operational model and for its commercial and financial models, as well as in its cooperation with customers and suppliers and with society as a whole.

On its route to Net Zero, it is essential to continue optimizing its internal processes, collaborating with suppliers and promoting the circular economy, helping to decarbonize its customers' activities, aligning environmental and financial sustainability, being transparent and involving everyone.

This new electrical equipment will arrive in Callao in mid 2023 and will be part of the expansion project, which represents an investment of US$350 million and will allow to meet a greater demand of containers for the benefit of the Peruvian economy.

This purchase will help to significantly reduce the company's emissions by 2030. Thus, from the beginning of 2022, the only equipment to be purchased for DP World will be electric. In addition, the company aims to electrify all of its diesel RTGs (25) and all of its diesel trucks (41) to further reduce its carbon footprint.

"We are very proud to confirm that DP World Callao Port Terminal is going all-electric. This purchase means a reduction of 1.5 million liters of diesel each year. In addition, we will start converting diesel equipment to electric equipment to achieve carbon neutrality," said Nicolas Gauthier, CEO of DP World in Peru.

This initiative is part of DP World's worldwide commitment to the environment. Its sustainability strategy, called Our World, Our Future, is developed in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in order to have a positive economic and social impact on society.

As data is increasingly needed to guide policy and decarbonization efforts, the Net Zero Research Fund will help facilitate greater opportunities for climate change research in the academic and non-profit communities in Canada, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

"With Scotiabank's CAD $10 million Scotiabank Net Zero Research Fund, we are making an ongoing investment to facilitate innovation in research and development to support a low-carbon economy."

By identifying pathways and initiatives that require investment to accelerate their adoption or scale-up on a large scale, the fund will also strengthen relationships between academic and non-profit research institutions and the business sector through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

In 2022, Scotiabank support amounts will range from CAD $25,000 to CAD $100,000. Any application that is not funded in this call may be resubmitted for 2023.
