The new business equation after COP30

As highlighted by Marian Buraschi, in its column published in the Gestión Newspaper, the COP30 presidency has put forward a Action Agenda aimed at mobilizing stakeholders to accelerate solutions that promote climate justice, food security and reduced inequalities. Dan Ioschpe, Brazilian entrepreneur and High Level Champion, summed it up as a “mutirão”: a global collective effort that connects governments with solution drivers on the ground.

The Climate Policy Initiative's Global Landscape of Climate Finance 2025 report reveals significant progress: global climate finance exceeded USD 1.9 trillion,driven by a strong participation of the private sector,which, for the first time, contributed more than half of the capital. Despite this, adaptation finance continues to lag behind that for mitigation, highlighting important structural gaps. The paper also highlights how innovative instruments are emerging to unlock resources, especially in emerging economies.

This week we see several countries in the region affected by extreme weather events, from an unprecedented heat wave in Argentina to an unusual cyclone on the Pacific Ocean coast that is generating heavy rainfall and flooding in Peru and Ecuador.
Even more worrisome than the suffering and damage these events are generating is the realization that this is only the beginning of what is to come.

Human activity has irrevocably changed the global climate. Even if it were possible to stop all greenhouse gas emissions today, we would feel the consequences of a warmer atmosphere for several years to come. Faced with this scenario, companies face a double challenge - to increase their resilience to a changing climate and at the same time transform their business to decarbonize it in order to ensure their future sustainability.

In the Latin America Business Climate Action Report 2022, Of the 109 Latin American companies surveyed, 22% have identified the risks and opportunities that climate change presents to their business, and another 65% are in the process of doing so. 69% already measure their carbon footprint, but only 32% have a climate action plan to make reductions and monitor them. This is important because having a climate action plan has a strong impact on companies' climate ambition. Companies that have a climate action plan are 2 times more likely to have reduction and carbon neutrality targets.

What these figures tell us is that companies are aware of their impact, but they need to prioritize it in their business strategy and do the hard work of changing the way they operate in order to achieve a resilient business aligned with the decarbonization of our economy. more companies globally are reporting on their weather risk. However, they have yet to make most significant disclosures in terms of the challenges they are facing.

ENGIE y Grupo Enaex implementarán la primera producción de hidrógeno verde en el Perú

ENGIE Energía Perú, one of the largest electricity generators in the country, and Industrias Cachimayo, a company dedicated to the manufacture of ammonium nitrate of the Enaex Group, signed an agreement on October 3, through which the generator will certify that 100% of the energy consumption for the operation of Industrias Cachimayo's ammonium nitrate plant comes from renewable sources.

All this will be done under REC certification (issued by The International REC Standard), making this plant the first hydrogen production with green certification in Peru. The signing of this agreement was part of the commitment of both companies to use energy from renewable sources in their production.

Although Industrias Cachimayo's production plant already has electrolyzers, the equipment necessary to extract hydrogen, this alliance will allow the Enaex Group to move towards a more ammonia-free production with green hydrogen and thus contribute to a greener mining industry.

“We are companies with common visions and with a great interest to continue promoting the production and distribution of green hydrogen in Peru and other countries. This is a first step, but we are defining different points of collaboration to facilitate access to this unique fuel that will be part of the future of different industries,” said Daniel Cámac, Deputy Country Manager of ENGIE in Peru.

It is important to mention that, in line with this agreement, ENGIE is one of the driving forces behind green hydrogen worldwide, as this is one of the indispensable fuels in the energy transition to a carbon-neutral economy.

The Enaex Group, a supplier of blasting services for the mining and industrial sector, aims to reduce its emissions and move its operations towards a sustainable future.

It should be noted that Industrias Cachimayo is currently working on the modernization of its plant in order to ensure the operational continuity of its complex located in the Cusco region.

“As Enaex Group we defined several years ago a clear and powerful purpose: to humanize mining. The production of green hydrogen is a great first step and a concrete action with a lot of strategic sense around our sustainability program, this will also leverage a set of projects and initiatives that are already under development not only in Peru but globally,” said Rodrigo Pastor, Country Manager of ENAEX in Peru.

About green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is one of the most rapidly developing renewable fuels. It is versatile, efficient and renewable. It is presented as a solution for large industries that require high amounts of energy and at the same time seek to be environmentally friendly and economically profitable.

One of the best known ways to obtain it is the electrolysis process, through which water is decomposed to obtain oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen is released into the environment without contamination, and the hydrogen is stored for use as fuel in different industrial processes. For the hydrogen to be 100% green, only renewable energy can be used in the extraction process.

Ammonium nitrate is an inorganic chemical that, among its various uses, is used in the manufacture of explosives. The production of ammonium nitrate requires the neutralization of ammonia with nitric acid. In turn, the production of ammonia requires hydrogen as its main input. One way to obtain environmentally friendly ammonia is to use hydrogen from the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy.

Taking care of our planet is important, that is why many companies are creating strategies to reduce the consumption of available resources and thus be able to have a more respectful economy with our environment. Telecommunications businesses are no exception, although it is true that it is a great challenge for the sector, but progress is being made thanks to technology.

Some of the changes that are taking place are the change from copper to fiber optics and the digitalization of the network to reduce pollution. Also, the creation of the 5G technology which is faster and has better connectivity. Finally, many companies are starting to bet on renewable energies.

Telecommunications is already taking steps to make this ecological transition possible. Now it is the turn of other sectors to innovate and together we can help to make business more sustainable.

Conectando 5000 años de herencia textil con un futuro sostenible

Today, Peru is recognized and admired worldwide for its excellent food, of which we are very proud. However, Peru has been cooking for a little more than 300 years, but weaving for more than 5000 years. Some of these high quality textiles (made with sustainability) were found in Caral, considered the oldest city in America.

One thing the Peruvian textiles of 5000 years ago had in common was sustainability. For example: their main energy sources were the sun, rivers and the ocean (i.e. natural and renewable energy sources). Their main sources of water were rivers and lakes (which they did not pollute at all) and they did not emit gases (i.e. they were carbon neutral). All textiles were handmade, with natural fibers and colors, and the artisans were highly respected members of their communities. Interestingly, in those days they already applied many circular economy principles; for example, some garments were used for many generations (REUSE), had little or no waste (REDUCE) and some garments were recycled, after the death of their owners (RECYCLE).

Inspired by this ancient heritage, we are already starting to recycle our fibers and offering the world garments with recycled cotton and/or polyester, without losing the high quality of our products.

By 2030, we want the Peru be recognized for having the textile industry sustainable in the world, in 5 pillars:

Clean energyWe encourage the use of clean/renewable energy sources and plan to invest in, for example, solar panel parks, using the sun and water as our main sources of energy - just as our ancestors did.
WaterOur goal is to have the lowest water footprint in the world by applying reuse, reduction and recycling technologies.
Carbon neutralOur goal is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 (in line with the country's commitment) and to support protected natural areas, many of which have been described as "the lungs of the planet".
Clean productionWe will work with the government to reduce/eliminate waste and move towards a circular economy model, as we did 5000 years ago.
Decent workThe textile sector provides legal and decent work to almost 1 million people, where 60 % are women - who are highly respected in their homes and communities. Therefore, it is imperative to grow our business to provide more decent jobs to more people/women in Peru.

By 2030, we want MADE IN PERU garments to be synonymous with "high quality with sustainability" - and to place Peruvian textiles alongside Peruvian food on the pedestal of #1.

Axel Christensen, Director of Investment Strategy for Latin America, Latin America at Blackrock, tells us how the world's largest investment fund manager implements this way of doing business and encourages the creation of a better future.

What are the sustainable investment factors?

Sustainable investment criteria take into account 3 pillarsEnvironmental considerations, social responsibility and quality of corporate governance.

Why are these factors so relevant today?

Sustainability criteria are not such new elements in the investment world; in fact, some investors have been incorporating them from their own values since the 1960s. What has happened is that there is a great deal of evidence that demonstrates that applying these criteria and generating value for the company can go hand in hand. This evidence is so compelling that we have reached a point where we are now asking ourselves Why not? We know that these actions favor the good performance of the company by mitigating its risks, increasing its reputation and making better decisions.

Where does Latin America stand in terms of sustainable investments?

Latin America is at an “embryonic” stage in terms of the consideration of these criteria compared to Europe or the United States. We have companies with a long way to go. But just as this situation presents challenges, it offers great opportunities because these criteria fit with the knowledge and experience of other markets to know the most effective metrics, advance quickly and achieve more relevant improvements.

The situation of Peru is interesting, we are already beginning to see an increasing interest in investors to incorporate these elements in their investment processes and at the same time, the companies themselves are understanding the motivations of investors, both local and foreign. I believe that this perfect combination of investor interest and company receptiveness places Peru at the forefront in the region.

Why should these criteria be of interest to the investor?

Because it is not only a good way to be a good citizen and have good behaviors, but in the end it means having a good business that is not affected by regulatory changes, with its reputation at risk by not having a good relationship with its community or making the wrong decisions because it does not have good corporate governance. These criteria are aimed at making a good investment that allows income to be produced not only in the short term but also to be projected over a much longer investment horizon.

How does BlackRock measure sustainability criteria in its investments?

At BlackRock we have been incorporating these criteria for many years and this itself has led to an evolution. We started by applying filters, we wanted to eliminate or reduce exposure to companies that did not show good levels in these metrics. As we have come to understand the companies, those filters have led to interactions to maintain a long-term relationship, so we sit down with them and explain what types of objectives and metrics we are incorporating. From initially applying filters and being exclusionary, we have moved to an inclusive stage, we want to evolve together with the companies. The last stage that we have been exploring more and more intensively is to become fully active, to direct our focus to look for investment opportunities in those companies and sectors that are seeking to generate a favorable impact in the environmental, social and good corporate governance dimensions.
