In response to the growing need to address environmental, social and governance challenges, SIMALCO presents "ESG: Leadership to create sustainable value", a meeting that will be held in Lima on November 29, 2023.

Companies, facing potential new regulations and growing investor demand for responsible business practices, are looking for sound sustainable economy strategies. This event will bring together leading experts and representatives from some of the most prestigious companies in Peru to present and discuss the fundamental role of ESG strategies in today's business management.

On World Environmental Education Day, which was celebrated on January 26, Industrias San Miguel communicated through digital platforms the experience of the policies and projects it develops regarding environmental care and protection.

He highlighted the organization of plastic container recycling contests in educational institutions, agreements with municipalities to encourage the correct segregation of waste, workshops and awareness-raising events aimed at local communities.

Likewise, the commitment to manage environmentally friendly operations based on clean production, a culture of responsible consumption of resources and relations with stakeholders.

Exhibición de las cuatro tecnologías electrificadas de Toyota por primera vez en el Perú

The event “Technologies for sustainable mobility” highlighted hybrid models as the best transition technology option for Peru.
The exhibition included the hydrogen-powered Mirai, the electric Lexus UX 300e and the ethanol-hybrid Corolla Cross model, which arrived for the first time in the country.
The brand's objective is sustainability and to contribute to the reduction of emissions generated by the automotive sector to prevent global warming.
Thirteen presentations were made to more than 1,000 people, including engineering and automotive students, authorities and companies from the public and private sectors participated in these activities.

Lima, November 2022. Toyota del Perú presented for the first time in Peru the event “Technologies for sustainable mobility”, a series of presentations aimed at sharing the company's approach to reduce CO2 emissions from mobility and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It also aims to promote the growth of sustainable mobility in the country.

The presentation showcased the four electrified technologies developed by Toyota that reduce fuel consumption and footprint compared to traditional combustion engines: electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric and hydrogen-powered electric.

The electrified technologies presented were:

Hybrids: HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Corolla Hybrid HEV, Corolla Cross Flex (HEV FFV)
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle: PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
Electric: Lexus UX 300e BEV (Battery Electic Vehicle: Battery Electric Vehicle)
Hydrogen: Mirai FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle - Hydrogen)

Global warming is one of the greatest challenges for humanity in the 21st century. Climate change has brought with it high economic and social costs, and Peru, as a biodiverse country, has suffered its adverse effects. In the last 100 years there has been an increase in surface, land and sea temperatures, bringing us close to the dangerous limit of 1.5 degrees of global warming.

Toyota is committed to sustainability and achieving carbon neutrality, and is constantly seeking to reduce its impact throughout the life cycle of its products to address climate change, including the entire life cycle of its vehicles: from materials sourcing and manufacturing to recycling and disposal.
As part of the company's strategy for this challenge is to offer a variety of electrified technology options to meet this challenge.

“At Toyota, we are committed to the challenge of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Based on our experience, we do not believe there is one technology that solves everything. That's why Toyota has developed four electrification technologies to reduce emissions in the most efficient way. These advances are electrified hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles,” explains David Caro, Public Relations and Business Transformation Manager of Toyota del Perú.

The advantages of each depend on the needs of the clients and the context of each country.
64% of primary energy in Peru comes from renewable sources (MINEM 2021). According to the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP), there are only 33 charging stations with 56 connectors of which 4 stations are fast charging stations. “At Toyota we believe that the transitional technology to expand and achieve electrification in Peru is hybrid vehicles. It is the most practical solution while we work together in the infrastructure and expansion of other electrified technologies,” said Caro.

Technologies for sustainable mobility

Toyota del Perú aimed to reach all audiences to generate discussion and share its experience and proposed technologies for Peru. The presentations “Technologies for sustainable mobility” Toyota's exhibition began with a tour of four important educational institutions such as the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) and the vocational training center SENATI, with the participation of a total of more than 1,000 students from engineering and automotive careers. Authorities, institutions and companies from the sector also participated in the exhibition, which was held at the Las Palmas air base in Surco.

These presentations are led by David Caro, Public Relations and Business Transformation Manager of Toyota del Peru and Joel Castillo, Assistant Manager of Planning & Product of Toyota del Peru, who shared the company's vision of sustainability in the automotive sector and presented the advances in electrified technologies developed by the brand to reduce CO2 emissions to move towards sustainable mobility.

Toyota, pioneer and leader in electrified vehicles

Toyota was a pioneer in the development of electrified vehicles globally. In 1997 it introduced the first commercial hybrid in history, Toyota Prius, which in 2009 would become the first hybrid in Latin America. In 2019, Corolla Hybrid was introduced, the first vehicle manufactured in the region, at Toyota's plant in Indaiatuba, Brazil.

Toyota's fundamental objective is to be a sustainable 100% company, which is why it is fully committed to electrification. The brand leads the hybrid market globally.
Today it has 63 electrified models and 20 million units sold worldwide. Thanks to this production, since 1997, the brand has managed to reduce 160 million tons of CO2, which means 1.5 million conventional vehicles each year.

Fenix celebró el día de la Sostenibilidad 2022

The Corporate Affairs management and the HSE area were responsible for carrying out the activations both at the Chilca thermal power plant and at the Magdalena administrative offices, encouraging all employees to measure their carbon footprint and commit to reducing it, as a prelude to the sustainability event that was held virtually.

The purpose of this event was to present the projects that are being developed within the company and how this applies to its operation, involving its employees, neighbors, customers and suppliers. This space was moderated by Roxana Aliaga, corporate affairs manager of Fenix, the presentation on carbon footprint in companies by Victor Sanchez, nexos +1 sustainability specialist, as well as the participation of a luxury panel made up of Fenix leaders, including: Carlos Moran, head of social responsibility; Elias Galdós, head of HSE; Juan Francisco Meza, head of human management and Silvia Changana, sales and customer management specialist. During the panel, the leaders took the opportunity to share what is being developed in each of their areas and contributed to expand the information on the importance of measuring their carbon footprint and finding alternatives for a more sustainable life, inviting them to involve their family and friends as well.

It was also a great opportunity to share with the attendees, the news of the awarding of the first star The company obtained the Carbon Footprint certificate from the Ministry of the Environment's Carbon Footprint program, which was obtained because the company measured its carbon footprint and reported its emissions in the established period during the year 2021.

“In this edition we wanted to land the sustainability approach with initiatives and indicators that are already being worked on within Fenix and that have an impact on the core business. It has also been a great opportunity to learn that we as individuals also impact the environment with our carbon footprint and that with more sustainable habits we can contribute to change”, said Roxana Aliaga, Corporate Affairs Manager.

The future we choose:

Building a sustainable and resilient future from Latin America

The challenge of degraded natural ecosystems, unstable climate, social inequity, and consumption trends drive our expectations of the role our leaders and companies should play in building our future. In this first block, we set out our great global challenge: to reduce inequality gaps and reduce our GHG emissions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees in 10 years. Faced with this collective challenge, what is the future we choose for Latin America?

Trends that will define our future

The way of doing business has changed substantially with the health crisis and will continue to do so in the near future. In this space we identify and delve into trends such as: consumer preferences and behavior; advances in technology; the state of the environment and natural resources; and trends in policies and regulations that influence the business strategies of the future.
In addition, we will explore how these trends influence different sectors and territories, and instruments such as Long Term Strategies (LTS) that allow us to build our future with present actions.

Organizations and roles of the future: How do our roles evolve in the future we choose?

COVID-19 has not invented trends as much as it has accelerated existing ones. Before the pandemic a purposeful consumer and a more informed citizen already had high expectations about the brands they consumed and the leaders they chose. The early response of our leaders has made a difference to those affected by COVID-19 in the countries of the region, so in this block we will examine the various key roles in reviving the economy and transforming Latin American society in a context of a latent climate crisis.

- Governments that add up: Where are policies going in a context of an unstable climate and inequity?
- Companies and partners that add up: Where are companies heading? What is the role of the company and the new partner?
- Consumers that add up: How does our consumption impact the world?
- Investors that add up: What are the new triple impact investment criteria?

Block 2

XXI Century Organizations:

The new role of business and leadership in the transformation of Latin American society

In this second block we will learn about the major changes that the economy and society will have to carry out in the next 10 years in a context of climate crisis and inequality. We will discuss the essential role that companies and their leaders are called to play in this context of an unstable climate. Finally, we will learn about cases of companies that have already taken this transformation path (or are taking it) and that, therefore, demonstrate a differentiating strength and capacity to sustain themselves in the market in the face of systemic risks such as COVID-19.

The new role of business and leadership in the transformation of Latin American society

The Latin American private sector plays a crucial role in building the future and the COVID-19 challenge has prompted companies to innovate their business models to face the crisis and be sustainable. When the healthcare crisis is over, will we return to Business as Usual or will we take the opportunity to RESET our traditional business models? If we want to re-engineer our future, we must rethink our businesses, our products and our impacts. In this space we explore the market opportunities available to those organizations willing to lead the transformation in a context of a latent climate crisis and inequity.

Time to RESET: The kind of business leadership needed for transformation

We will learn how the region's private sector must have the courage, enthusiasm and focus necessary to take advantage of the opportunity to transform society and reactivate the economy, generate new jobs, have a positive impact on the environment and ensure its sustainability over time. In this space we will talk with the leaders of tomorrow's companies about the new attributes of leadership and their role in building a sustainable future for all, and we will ask them how leadership is transformed in companies.

We will learn about inspiring success stories of companies that were born with a triple impact purpose linked to their business mission. We will ask them: What are the lessons learned from both on the road to sustainability, what path have they followed and how have they evolved along the way, and what challenges do they still face?

Companies: The Transformation Pathway to Resilience

In these conversations we will hear cases of companies that have been transforming their long-standing businesses in response to a changing context, where the response to the climate, environmental and social crisis has been informing the design of their business strategy and driving their path to achieve sustainability over time. We show how an early reading of the context has led them to make business transformation decisions that provide them with a source of competitiveness for the future.

Block 3

Financing the transformation of Latin America:

Opportunities and needs for business investment in Climate and Nature

The sustainability of our region and our businesses are linked to climate, ecosystem services and social stability. If we dream of a sustainable and resilient future, we must identify where we need to invest as a priority and how to finance those investment priorities. In this third block, we will understand how climate and nature are directly related to our business and economy. We will identify the different investment and financing opportunities that exist in Latin America to build a sustainable future, as well as the barriers and proposed solutions that we find through various actors in the climate, business, investment and financing worlds.

Investing in climate and nature: An imperative for Latin America

We explore the urgency of putting nature and humans at the center of the required transformation of our economies to bring sustainability to our lives, businesses and society. This space will share key information on how Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) in the region can contribute significantly to: reducing GHG emissions; addressing issues related to biodiversity loss, pressure on ecosystems as well as urgent economic and social needs; bringing stability to business. In addition, we will understand how these environmental imperatives influence new regulatory trends, policies and criteria for investment and financing in the region, and how companies in the sector are responding to this context with new products, services and internal processes.

Nature-based Solutions: Investment and Financing Opportunities in Latin America

Where do we find the investment opportunities that allow us to be low-carbon and resilient in an unstable climate context? How are they financed? In this block we will be exploring different investment and financing opportunities in Latin America, in from diverse sectors, starting with: Regenerative Agriculture and Livestock; Soil and Ecosystem Restoration; Sustainable Forest Management (carbon sequestration, timber and non-timber industry, reforestation, afforestation) and Conservation, Ecotourism and Ecosystem Services.
We will meet companies and organizations that are carrying out these activities and impact business models, discover the potential market for these opportunities in Latin America, and identify companies and investors that offer financing services and investment vehicles for these types of opportunities.

Scaling the transformation

Financial instruments, investment vehicles and profitable business models exist, how can we scale their use to solve the global problem of climate instability and the pressure on ecosystem services, while at the same time solving inequity? How can we generate a growing market of supply and demand for these services and products in line with our global challenge? This space will seek to answer these questions and find solutions.

If you were unable to participate, here are the key aspects to consider when documenting how your organization is contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and targets.

About the Dragonfly Project & UNEP-DTU Partnership

To achieve the Paris Agreement goal of keeping the global average temperature increase well below 2°C, relative to pre-industrial levels, and to continue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C, every effort that results in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) counts. In this context, Maria Paz Cigarán (CEO of Libélula) opened the webinar by highlighting the crucial role of the private sector in catalyzing climate action from companies in Latin America, and thus contributing to the greater ambition of countries' climate commitments. However, although several initiatives have been taking place at all scales in the region, they are still not measured, monitored or reported. In fact, according to the Science Based Targets (2020) which collects information from companies that pledge science-based climate commitments, of the 854 companies that registered their commitment worldwide, only 4.0% were from Latin America.

In order to establish an adequate transparency process for the private sector, this project seeks to answer 3 fundamental questions:
(1) Why do companies in Latin America take and report climate action?,
(2) What is the path you are following to transform your companies? How are you doing it?, y
(3) How to catalyze greater climate action in the region and have it reported and made visible, contributing to the countries' climate goals?
The results of ongoing studies addressing these questions will be shared in subsequent issues of this newsletter.

The importance of documenting your organization's contribution to Sustainable Development

Companies have announced important climate commitments based on the different actions they have been developing. Thus, Fatemeh Bakhtiari (Senior Researcher, UNEP-DTU Partnership) argued that documenting how and how much the private sector has been contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and targets is key to promoting and scaling up its participation in increasing ambition to meet climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda; both as part of national efforts and to give credibility to the numerous international pledges made by these actors.

On the other hand, demonstrating how these actors have made and can make important contributions will help lay the groundwork for sustained changes in economic, political, social and technical systems, as well as attract private investors to improve the financing of low-carbon projects aligned with the SDGs.

In organizational terms, measuring and reporting climate action not only raises awareness of climate change within companies, but also serves as the backbone of an appropriate action plan, including the evaluation and monitoring of its impact. In addition, it helps decision-makers develop effective strategies to achieve sustainable development objectives in the company by better understanding the impacts associated with policies and actions.

On the key aspects of documenting your contribution to Sustainable Development

Fatemeh Bakhtiari also shared through this space the key aspects to systematically assess and report on the multiple impacts of climate action through standardized formats, under the framework of the ICAT methodology:

Prioritize actions that can contribute to more than one goal. Through proper design, an action or set of actions can address the SDGs, GHG reduction, climate change adaptation and economic development.
Determine evaluation objectives which should consider the relevant impacts of actions on sustainable development in an integrated manner, in three dimensions: environmental, social and economic impacts.
Define a baseline scenario and an action implementation scenario.. The estimated difference between the two scenarios corresponds to the impact of the action.
Determine monitoring indicators over time that are useful for understanding whether the action is on track, although it will not explain why the changes have occurred.
Choose a feasible level of accuracy according to the objectives and available resources. Consider the number of impact indicators to monitor, qualitative and quantitative impact assessment, data and methodologies to be applied.
Characterize each impact in terms of the probability of its occurrence, its magnitude, its nature (positive or negative) and the reporting of its results; always based on evidence.
The progress monitoring must be aligned with with existing and emerging national frameworks, targets and indicators.
